ERIC STARED OUT THE window at the grazing horses as he talked with his parents. He loved to touch base every other day, let them know he was fine. He had a little over a month. But, he wasn’t so into going back home.
"So, how are you enjoying your vacation?" His dad asked after they had finished talking official stuff.
"Great, father." He smiled at himself. A little over a week ago, he still contemplated quitting. "I'll be home in a few weeks."
"Have you had time to visit your grandmother yet?"
"No, but I'll definitely do that."
"Okay, son. It's great to know you're doing okay. So far things have cooled down somewhat."
It always did. Only that it lasted longer when it involved his family. "I'll run now, father. Take care of yourself and Mother."
"Sure and you too."
He ended the call. Next, he placed a call to Harry.
“I didn’t know you would last out there this long.”
“You underestimate me. I do whatever I set my heart to do. You know that.”
“Don’t I?”
They talked for a moment. “How are my parents really doing? I talk with them every other day but I think they are trying to spare me the stress.”
“They’re dealing with everything okay. A lot of media questions and all of that but nothing they can't handle. Still, I’m sure they miss you.”
His dad said things had cooled off a bit. Truth be told, if something as huge as a botched royal wedding blew off that quickly, he'd be surprised. “I’ll be back in no time. Let me know of anything that needs my attention, but it has to be of utmost emergency.”
“You want to tell me what’s keeping you out there? You don’t possibly love rural life so much, do you?” This was one question Harry asked every time they talked. Eric didn’t answer before; he wasn’t answering now.
“You know where I am?” he asked to confirm what he suspected.
“You bet. I’ll come see for myself sometime.”
“You show yourself here, you’ll be sorry you did.”
“I’ll take my chances.”
Eric ended the call chuckling. He didn’t doubt that Harry could show up. If he said he would do something, you could go to sleep because he wouldn’t rest until he accomplished the task. Which was why Eric loved him. Harry was more than a friend. He was like a brother.
Rising, he went out of his room to catch some air. “Evening.”
Jordan glanced up from where she sat on the porch swing working on her laptop.
“Hey,” she tucked strands of hair behind her ear. She still had it down the way she wore it to church. His fingers itched to brush it like he'd wanted to all day.
But he’d promised her father, and no matter how much she drew him in, he’d keep his distance. Especially, as thoughts of what kissing her would be like occupied his mind. “May I?” he asked gesturing to the spot on the swing.
“Sure.” She moved to give him space, but not as much as she gave him when he first came to the ranch.
